After-hours calls: what to do when the phone rings at 9pm
You do not owe every caller your evening. You do need a rule you can keep when the phone lights up during dinner.
Updated 31 July 2026
Pick one after-hours rule you can keep: closed with a morning callback, emergencies only at a published uplift, or always-on at a proper evening rate. Match it to your trade, put the threshold on your site and in the greeting, and make the handset enforce it with voicemail, a separate work number, or a divert. Do not list yourself as open 24 hours unless you mean it.
A locksmith in Leeds knows the 9pm ring is probably bread and butter. A bathroom fitter in the same city knows it is probably someone who wants a ballpark for next spring. Same ringtone, different business. Write the rule for your trade before you are tired and guilty.
What after-hours phone policies actually work?
Closed after 6pm
Voicemail says you are closed and will call in the morning. Works for planned work (bathrooms, rewires, extensions). Risky for locksmiths, emergency plumbers and anyone whose Google listing says 24/7.
Emergencies only
You publish an out-of-hours rate and a short definition: no heat in winter, uncontrolled leak, lockout, unsafe electrics. Everything else gets a morning callback. Needs a greeting or a person who can tell the difference.
Always on (paid for it)
You take the call, you charge a proper evening or weekend uplift, and you are honest about response time. Fine if the money is worth the sleep. Unsustainable if every dripping tap gets the same urgency as a burst main.
How should you price evening call-outs?
Call-out uplift
Many emergency trades charge a higher attendance fee after a stated time (e.g. after 6pm or at weekends), then normal labour. Put the threshold on your website and say it on the phone before you leave the drive.
Minimum ticket
A 9pm visit that pays the same as a Tuesday 10am job will train you to resent the phone. A clear minimum (call-out + first hour) stops you negotiating against yourself on the doorstep.
Say no without a speech
“I can do emergency leak work tonight from £X attendance; for a dripping tap I can look tomorrow from 8.” One sentence. Callers respect clarity more than a guilty essay.
How do you set your phone for after hours?
- Record an after-hours greeting that matches the policy (closed / emergencies / morning callback).
- Prefer a separate work number you can silence without missing family calls.
- If someone else (partner, mate, service) covers evenings, set the divert and brief them with the same intake questions you would ask.
Triage language for winter boiler panic sits in the cold-snap boiler guide. Use it when the 9pm call is “no heating” and you need to know if it is a frozen condensate or a van job.
Let the phone take details while you finish dinner
Graftline can answer in your business name after hours, ask the urgency questions you care about, and put real emergencies on your WhatsApp while routine jobs wait for morning. You still choose what you attend. You stop discovering the urgent ones as a missed-call icon at midnight.

After-hours questions
Should my Google listing say open 24 hours?
Only if you mean it. 'Open 24 hours' with a voicemail that says ring back tomorrow is how you earn angry reviews. If you offer true emergency cover, say so. If you do not, use normal hours and handle true urgents case by case.
What if a letting agent expects 24/7?
Price the retainer or the out-of-hours rate in daylight, in writing. Agents who need guaranteed cover should pay for guaranteed cover. A handshake 'just this once' becomes every Friday night.
Can I divert only after hours?
Networks do not usually offer a clock-based divert on a basic mobile. People approximate it: leave *61* on all day (phone rings first, then divert), or manually set/cancel all-calls divert (*21*) when you knock off. Some use a separate work SIM they power down. See the divert codes guide for the actual dial strings.
Locksmiths and plumbers seem different here.
They are. A lockout at 11pm is the job. A kitchen quote at 11pm is not. Match the policy to the trade. Our pages for locksmiths and plumbers spell out how urgent those calls tend to be.
